Feminist Stylistics remains even today, almost twenty-years after its publication, a ground-breaking work in the field. It provides an insight into aspects of feminist writing, on the one hand, and stylistics, on the other hand, and it is useful for young researchers with an interest in the field, as it is clearly structured and does not require prior thorough knowledge of the feminist issues tackled. Another drawback of the traditional approach is that most texts focused on in stylistic analyses are canonical— drawn from a limited number of texts which are seen to have literary value e. Lawrence, Shakespeare, Pinter, Beckett and so on.

Read preview Synopsis In this timely, provocative and lively book, Sara Mills opens up the study of style to feminist inquiry. Combining insights from literary and linguistic theory, she provides a rationale for the interrogation of texts from a feminist perspective. Through an examination of both literary and non-literary texts, including pop songs, newspaper advertisements, jokes and pulp fiction, Mills examines such issues as sexism, political correctness, agency and meaning.
While there have been numerous books on both feminist literary theory and on feminist linguistic analysis, this is the first skills-enabling approach to the theory and practice of feminist stylistics.
The author provides a tool-kit with which to expose the gender bias of both canonical and popular texts. Excerpt This book has had a rather chequered career: I began writing it on my own, but after I had completed about half of it, Shan Wareing and I decided that our interests were sufficiently close to warrant our writing it together. For two years we worked together on the project, during which time we both started new jobs and began to have numerous other commitments.
Finally, because of pressure of work, we decided that I should finish the book alone. I would like to thank Shan for permission to publish her contributions in revised form; some of her contributions appear in modified form in Wareing I would also like to thank her for reading through the manuscript.
