HAAPSALU SCARF PDF

Collection of Nancy Bush. The exhibition fascinated me: I studied the items displayed and took many notes. Below are some of the characteristics associated with both true Haapsalu shawls or scarves and rebellious ones. Both are important to keeping the year-old heritage of making Haapsalu shawls and scarves alive. True Haapsalu Lace A true Haapsalu shawl or scarf is always made of percent wool. Although other fibers can make a lovely and traditional-looking shawl or scarf, percent wool is firmly part of the tradition.

This publication contains twenty unique patterns that Linda designed for square scarves. The introduction includes some history of knitting in Haapsalu, as well as general information about making Haapsalu scarves. The patterns are titled with the month and year that Linda finished each one. The first page presents a chart of one quarter of the whole design—the lower right corner. The second page has an image of the completed scarf and a chart of the outer edge. Because there are no other instructions, the knitter has to work out the number of stitches to be cast on for the main scarf as well as the number needed for the outer edge.

The book also assumes that the knitter knows the techniques for finishing the scarf. This tour de force is certain to become a family heirloom. Wrap yourself or someone you love in this stunning traditional Estonian square scarf. Here, the square scarf was folded into a triangle. Photo by Joe Coca.

I was also drawn to the way the ornate border contrasts with the center. Knitting as well as writing this pattern in a more formal way gave me great pleasure, because I consider Linda a friend and have admired her work for many years. I am honored to tell her story. Haapsalu scarfs

The women of Haapsalu knitted square scarves to keep warm in winter. In the 19th century mud bath establishments brought wealthy Russians to this health resort and the women found that they had buyers for their handcraft. In time scarves evolved from simple patterns and few colours black, natural white, gray to the delicate lacy scarves that many noble ladies desired. The new railway line brought with itself many new vacationers and the steamers visiting Haapsalu harbour spread the word about the scarves and the scarves themselves to other countries beyond Russia. When Estonia became independent in the number of european vacationers rose and the scarves became known in Scandinavia, continental Europe, England and even in Canada.
